Sumatra Weather, When to Go and Climate Information

(Sumatra, Indonesia)

Being located right next to the world's equator, it will really come as no great surprise that the climate of Sumatra is hot and very tropical in character. As with the whole of Indonesia, the weather experienced by Sumatra can be categorized as just two seasons - dry and wet.

The dry season is when most tourists tend to holiday in Sumatra, arriving anytime between May to September. Although the climate during the dry season is really very favourable, occasional downpours are not unheard of and can appear completely out of the blue, disappearing almost as quickly as they arrived.

Seasonal Climate Variations / When to Go

The island's wet season arrives in October in northern Sumatra and begins to affect the more southerly climate during November. January and February tend to be the wettest months, when tropical rainy weather can have an effect on travel plans and disrupt sightseeing.

However, there are usually plenty of dry spells in between the showers and storms, and if you bring some light waterproofs, you can still enjoy a holiday during the Indonesian wet season. Since tourism levels understandably peak in the dry season of Sumatra, a holiday in the wet season can see considerable savings when it comes to accommodation.
